Do I need a website if I have a Facebook page?.
Short answer: yes — and not because websites are my trade. Plenty of Maltese businesses run entirely on Facebook and Instagram, and for a while it works: it’s free, everyone’s on it, and posting a photo takes seconds. The problem isn’t what social does — it’s what it quietly doesn’t do, and who’s actually in control.
You don’t own your Facebook page
Meta does. The algorithm decides who sees your posts — and organic reach for business pages has been shrinking for years, precisely so you’ll pay to boost. Accounts get restricted or hacked, and support is a black hole; every Maltese business owner knows someone who lost a page overnight with years of followers in it. A website is the one marketing asset that can’t be taken away, throttled or held hostage.
Google can’t rank your Facebook posts
When someone searches “electrician Mosta” or “dive school Gozo”, Google shows websites and Business Profiles — not your Facebook feed. Social posts are essentially invisible to search, and search is where people go when they’re ready to buy. Social reaches people scrolling; search catches people looking. A business with only a Facebook page is absent from the moment that matters most.
Social can’t close the deal
Prices, services, opening hours, booking a slot, paying online — on Facebook these all collapse into “send us a message”, which means every enquiry needs a human reply and half of them arrive at midnight. A website answers the repeat questions automatically, takes bookings while you sleep, and looks credible to the customers who check you out before spending — which is nearly all of them.
The right answer is both, with clear jobs
Social is your shop window on a busy street: awareness, personality, staying in people’s feeds. The website is the shop: where searches land, questions get answered, and bookings or sales actually happen. Every post links back to the site; the site captures the demand social creates — and the demand Google sends that social never sees. Businesses that connect the two stop losing the customers who fall between them.
FAQs
A website sounds expensive compared to a free Facebook page.
Compare it against what “free” costs: boosted posts add up, and every missed search is a customer a competitor got. A lean business site is a one-time build that works around the clock for years — and you can see one working for free before spending anything.
I get all my customers from Instagram. Why change what works?
Don’t change it — add to it. If Instagram is producing, a website multiplies it: your bio link lands somewhere that converts, and you start capturing Google searches on top. It also insures you against the day reach drops, which is a when, not an if.
What should a small business website have, minimum?
Services with real information, prices or “from” pricing where possible, photos, reviews, opening hours, and one obvious action — call, book or buy. Five good pages beat twenty thin ones.
